Lake Tahoe. Overview.
The most popular ski resorts around in the vicinity of Lake Tahoe are Heavenly, North Star and Squaw Valley. Thousands of people from all over Nevada and California including Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco rush to the Lake Tahoe slopes for some the best skiing anywhere. Lake Tahoe as well as enjoying the most spectacular scenery from lakes to mountains is also well known for its blizzards. So it is a great reliable ski holiday alternative to Europe, which has unreliable snowfall.
As regards holidaying the North shore is smart, with the ski resort of Squaw Valley near Tahoe City. Squaw Valley is a big ski resort which hosted the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. The West shore has a more dramatic terrain along the lines of old fashioned frontier US. The East shore is yet to be developed and the South shore is rather flash with run down motels and casinos.
South Lake Tahoe & West Shore on the Stateline attracts gamblers across the line in Nevada. Thousands also enjoy the mega ski resort of Heavenly, with its gondolas, lakes and fabulous views in Summer as well as Winter. Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is a popular playground. There are many parks and areas of natural wonder in this part of Lake Tahoe so there is something for everyone amongst the trails, castles and historic sites.
